Single roll, double roll, and why wallpaper is priced one way and packaged another
The single-roll price on the tag is a costing unit, not what ships. Here is how bolts are actually packaged and why buyers order in even numbers.
The single most common purchasing mistake with wallpaper is confusing the pricing unit with the packaging unit. Prices are quoted per single roll because that is the long-standing costing convention, but almost nothing ships as a single roll. Material is put up in bolts — most often double or triple rolls — because a longer continuous run wastes less at the pattern match.
An American single roll is a unit of area, conventionally about 36 square feet, regardless of the width a given mill runs. This is a trade convention rather than a legal standard, and the exact usable area varies a little by manufacturer, so it is confirmed per product, not assumed. A double roll is two singles in one continuous bolt, near 72 square feet; a triple is three. The continuous length matters because repeats force waste: on a wall needing strips just over a single roll's length, a single-roll bolt yields one usable strip and a long offcut, while a double-roll bolt yields the same strips with far less scrap. That is why trade desks quote coverage in doubles.
For a buyer this changes the order in two concrete ways. First, order in even numbers of single rolls so the quantity resolves cleanly into bolts. Second, read the coverage figure, not the roll count: a European roll and an American roll do not contain the same area, so comparing "rolls" between sources compares nothing. Convert everything to square feet, or to square meters, before you compare a price.
The purchase order should state the pricing unit and the packaging unit separately and confirm both with the supplier before the goods are cut, because a mismatch here is not a rounding error. Ordering "twelve rolls" when the estimate meant twelve double rolls delivers half the material to the job, and once a bolt is cut to a purchase order it is generally non-returnable.
